Fishing Permits & Regulations

  • What species can I fish for, and what are the rules?
The wild waters hold sea trout and brown trout, with occasional salmon. Please note that salmon and sea trout fishing is strictly catch-and-release, and fishing for salmon and sea trout is completely prohibited on Sundays by Scottish law.
  • Are fishing permits included with my lodge booking?
No. Fishing permits are not included in your stay and must be booked separately and directly via either our online booking links or with our ghillie or office.
  • How does fishing work at Finsbay Cottages?
Our lodges sit at the heart of three amalgamated fishing beats – Finsbay, Flodabay, and Stockinish; spanning roughly 100 lochs and three distinct river systems across South Harris.

Getting Here & Driving on Harris

  • What are the rules for driving on single-track roads?
In Scotland, we drive on the left. Harris features single-track roads with designated passing places. If a vehicle approaches from the front or wishes to overtake from behind, pull into the passing place on your left, or wait opposite the passing place on your right. Always give way to traffic moving uphill and reverse safely into a passing place if required to let vehicles pass.
  • Do I need to book the ferry in advance?
Yes. It is a crucial travel tip to book your vehicle ferry spot well in advance of your trip, as summer spaces are highly sought after.
  • How do I reach the Isle of Harris?
You can travel by air or by sea: By Plane: Flights operate from Glasgow, Edinburgh, Barra, Benbecula, or Inverness to Stornoway Airport on the Isle of Lewis. The lodges are approximately a 1-hour and 30-minute drive from the airport, where car hire is available. By Ferry: Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac) operates car and pedestrian ferries 7 days a week. Routes include Uig (Skye) to Tarbert (~1.5 hours), Ullapool to Stornoway (~2.5 hours), and North Uist to Leverburgh.

Local Amenities & Island Culture

  • What should I expect on a Sunday on the Isle of Harris?
Sunday is a traditional day of rest on the island. Most local shops close, public buses do not operate, and fishing for salmon or sea trout is strictly prohibited by law across Scotland. However, the local airport and ferry terminals do remain open. We encourage guests to embrace the local culture and utilize Sundays to relax, spend time with family, or take a walk.
  • Where can I buy groceries and fuel near Finsbay?
Tarbert: Our nearest town houses the ferry terminal, A D Monro butcher and grocer, Nook & Scranny Mini-market, and a 24 hr fuel station selling petrol and diesel at Ardhasaig. Leverburgh: Located 6 miles away, Leverburgh offers a 24hr petrol station and the Harris community co-op store (The Clachan). Stornoway: For larger supermarkets (Tesco and Co-op), Stornoway is roughly a 1.5-hour drive away. We highly recommend filling up your vehicle’s fuel tank before arriving at Finsbay.

Lodge Amenities & Accessibility

  • What makes our lodges unique for nature lovers?
Inver Lodge features a private glass conservatory facing the river estuary, purpose-built as a dedicated wildlife-watching room to spot passing seals, otters, and migratory fish. All lodges look out onto Loch Finsbay and the surrounding moorland.
  • Do the lodges have saunas?
Yes. Arran, Coll and Inver Lodges feature their own private Scandinavian sauna integrated right into the property for post-adventure recovery.

Yes. All three lodges are engineered for accessibility, featuring an expansive open-plan ground floor layout that includes a twin bedroom and a fully accessible shower room/toilet with grab rails.
